El Zapotillo Dam

Description of social and environmental action.

Needs detected:

FCC Construcción in Mexico cooperates in the communities in which it operates and works on different projects aimed at the most disadvantaged people. Supports childhood and youth, culture, sports and the solidarity economy.

Solutions adopted:

The “El Zapotillo” dam has a Social Responsibility program that helps the communities close to the project: Yahualica and Zapotillo.

  • Yahualica- Zapotillo: It is the most important project carried out to avoid the transit of heavy vehicles through the town of Yahualica de Gonzalez Gallo. It consists of approximately 4 km paved and accesses to the different ranches in the area.
  • River crossing ford: in the rainy season, it becomes not possible to cross from the right bank of the river to the left bank, so that the town of Zapotillo is cut off from that of Yahualica, having to travel 60 km through Mexticacán. A concrete ford was built with drainage pipes, leaving communication between both towns now connected for a distance of 14 km.
  • Repair of streets in Yahualica: due to the increase in the foreign population and transportation of materials for the construction of the dam, before the execution of the Bypass, different streets and areas in the town of Yahualica were repaired.
  • Domestic water intakes: In the town of El Zapotillo, it was supported with civil works and masonry for household water intakes, since there was no running water network.
  • Donation of firewood and wood to settlers: Both the firewood produced from clearing in excavation areas and the waste of wood used in construction is disposed of for use by the residents as the main means of preparing food.
  • I board the fence to collect rainwater: work was carried out with site tractors to form boards of water (water holes) to take advantage of the rainy season and form a natural pond that is used for agriculture and livestock in the dry season .
  • Reforestation of the Jihuite dam and the Tepatitlan River: specimens raised in the nursery of the work were donated (either rescued from excavation areas or planted for the final reforestation) and planted in different areas of the region.

Results:

  • Improving communication between communities
  • Generation of wealth and well-being from approaches of responsibility, respect and involvement
